Haunted Mansion (2023)

I had absolutely no expectations for Disney’s new attempt at a Haunted Mansion movie. The last one was… not great. But this Haunted Mansion? I was really impressed, and surprised! It struck the right balance between taking the material seriously and knowing it was a little silly. There were even several legit creepy parts.

Hats off to the cast! (No pun – or hat box – intended.) Everyone did a perfect job with their characters. They were also able to make fun of themselves in some places and yet pull off some quite emotionally profound moments that were excellent. They even made me cry (twice)! It was far more dramatic and serious than I ever anticipated, and they did a really good job with it. If you’re expecting a completely fun and silly movie, this is not that. (I don’t mean that in a bad way, just manage your expectations.) The nods to the ride were excellent and so well integrated that I am positive I missed a few. The music department even trolled the audience during the scenes at the other house; did you catch it? Well played, guys, well played.
