Honorifics: A Conversation With Luke

Luke’s teacher has been out several days this week. He had one substitute Monday and Tuesday, and a different one on Wednesday. (Note: Ms. Jones is not his teacher’s real name.)

• DH: How was school today?
• Luke: Good. I stayed on green again.
• DH: Good job! Was Ms. Jones there today?
• Luke: No, we had a new teacher, another new teacher.
• DH: Not the one from yesterday?
• Luke: No, she was new.
• DH: Oh, what was her name?
• Luke: Um, I don’t remember, but it has Miss in it just like Miss Jones.
