Quartet (2012)

Quartet (2012) – Sweet little “British ensemble” film. I had absolutely NO idea that it was also Dustin Hoffman’s feature film directorial debut! As in, when I saw his name in the opening credits, I thought to myself, “is there a British Dustin Hoffman I don’t know about?!” Nope, same one, THE Dustin Hoffman. Nice performances by everyone, but Pauline Collins stole the movie as Cissy Robson, which is quite the feat given both Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly in many of her scenes. And Tom Courtenay was incredibly charming! I am interested in seeing more of his work; he’s been in many things that I’ve heard of, but almost none that I’ve actually seen. BTW, please don’t confuse this Quartet with Maggie Smith with the 1981 Quartet, also with Maggie Smith. I haven’t seen the 1981 film, but I hear other than the title and her, the two have nothing at all in common.
